Position Overview

Accountable for the Namakwa Sands Northern Operations technical support, medium-term technical improvement projects and set-up and maintaining of control documentation and standards.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Control system audits, health assessments, life cycle planning, and data analysis for optimization.
  • Documentation gap analysis – (P&ID’s – Control Narratives, Functional Specifications)
  • Manage a project to close the current documentation gap.
  • Set-up and maintaining Control Standards for the Namakwa Sands Northern operations
  • Provide control system support for large capital projects.
  • Process support - Assist in investigations following significant incidents and production excursions.
  • Co-ordinate and plan interface upgrades
  • Identify control improvement opportunities and work with the process control & operations teams to make improvements / resolve issues.
  • Manage medium to long-term opportunities in accordance with project management principles.


Qualifications & Experience

  • B Tech/BSc qualification with Electrical/Control Engineering subjects
  • 5+ years in a Heavy/Industrial Industry Environment (Essential)
  • 2+ years in a Control Engineering field will be advantageous
  • Knowledge/Experience with:
    • PLC/DCS Programming
    • Field Instrumentation and analyzers
    • Electrical drives – DOL & VFD
    • Control Systems PLC/DCS (Honeywell Advantageous)
    • Industrial Ethernet Communications– Profinet/ModbusTCP/IEC61850
    • P&ID’s – Control Narratives, Functional Specifications
    • MS Windows operating systems – Server & Client
    • Project Management
    • Process Alarm Systems

 

Key Competencies

  • Conduct work in accordance with set strategies, plans, and production targets. Ensure optimal use of available resources, assume responsibility for control infrastructure selection, metallurgical process design, and project life cycles.
  • Participate in safety initiatives, HAZOPS and maintain a healthy environment, and comply with SHEQ and technical requirements.
  • Initiate continuous improvement opportunities leading to cost-saving initiatives. Stay updated on new developments within the specialist field, conduct research work to initiate process changes, and act as a Business Improvement process champion.
  • Set up, monitor, and update a stakeholder register for each project study phase. Maintain and promote the T&I image, provide professional advisory support service.
  • Set up, monitor, and update project study schedules, risk registers, and expense control tools. Compile a detailed project study Scope Of Work, evaluate and complete project post-completion audits.
