Description

We are seeking candidates who can manage laboratory safety, compliance and analyses in support of R&D and Applications Testing in a well-equipped and continually updated analytical laboratory. The candidate is expected to run and maintain a variety of analytical instruments, continually develop expertise across a broad array of techniques, and train, manage, and develop a group of technical personnel on the use and care of the instruments. Technical expertise in laboratory safety and the use and maintenance of analytical instrumentation are required. Experiential expertise in measurements of a variety of inorganic, organic and polymeric analytes are all desirable. Preferred applicants will be motivated to continually improve the way the laboratory operates and the value of the analyses for internal and external customers.

The position will report directly to the Director of R&D and Technical Services and will work closely with R&D, Applications and Technical Service. Specific duties of the position include:

  • Lab Safety and Compliance – Working directly with the local safety leader to follow all laboratory safety protocols. Ensuring that all personnel working in the labs received appropriate lab safety training and refresher courses, updating chemical and hazardous materials inventories, managing hazmat waste inventories and scheduling waste pick-ups.
  • Analytical Instrumentation Maintenance – Manage the maintenance, repair, and calibration of over $10M of analytical instruments. Analytical instrumentation includes ThermoFisher ICP-MS and ICP-OES, Agilent GC, UIC Carbon Analyzer, Bruker XRD, Panalytical XRF, Surface Area analyzer, Particle Size  Analyzers, SEM, TEM, TGA, DSC, Tensiometer, ThermoFisher FTIR, and various scales, titrators, incubators, drying ovens and muffle furnaces.
  • Safe and Effective Analyses – Ensure the effective management of test requests including potential method development to meet an ever-changing set of requirements in new product development and customer support.
  • Continuous improvement in Laboratory Capability – Work with the Director of R&D to build and execute a capital plan to improve the analytical capability of the laboratory.
  • Global Collaboration – Work globally to provide analyses and expertise with the sister R&D site across multiple pigment plants and mining sites.
  • Manage Shared Laboratory Space – Facilitate the use of shared space most efficiently and effectively, implement standard operating procedures for the use of shared space and instruments, organize the flow of work in sample processing, maintain order, cleanliness and safety in all laboratories.
  • Instrumentation-Use Training – Train personnel on the proper use of instruments in research and QC analyses, and interpretation of results. Conduct analyses in areas of greatest expertise and continuing to build upon capabilities for additional analytical techniques.
  • Supervision 5 direct reports

Preferred Qualifications:

The most desirable candidate will have a Master’s degree (PhD preferred), or extensive experience in analytical lab management and in Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, or a related field, with at least 5 years of experience as a laboratory analytical chemist, or in a similar professional role. All candidates must have demonstrated experience with laboratory safety and compliance and be able to work autonomously.

A high level of expertise in statistical analysis including Design of Experiments and significant experience with LIMS are highly desirable.

The following soft skills are important for success in this position. The successful candidate will have excellent organizational skills, record keeping and labeling skills, written and spoken communication skills, and be able to coordinate laboratory safety practices. Additional soft skills include service-orientation, helpfulness, professional and collaborative generosity in working relationships with people from across the company (both vertically and horizontally) In addition, the candidate will be a strong team player, which requires both taking the lead in certain situations and following the lead in others. They will demonstrate reliability, professional conduct, a strong work ethic, and a genuine enthusiasm for high quality, safe, research, QC testing and method development.

The Lab Manager is responsible for instrumentation maintenance and troubleshooting, and lab compliance with necessary quality systems and industry standards. The environment is fast paced and will require strong organization skills to manage day to day activities and scheduling. Communication within the labs as well as with customers is critical to success in this role.

Minimum Education and Experience:

BS Degree supplemented with 3 – 5 years of related experience in an analytical laboratory or science lab. A MS or Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry is preferred.
