Tronox is embarking on a sustainability journey to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 through carbon footprint and energy efficiency strategies. Tronox have made commitments to our stakeholders to reach the following targets:

  • 35% emissions reduction in 2025
  • 50% emissions reduction in 2030
  • Net zero carbon by 2050

Tronox South Africa is a large contributor to Tronox’s overall global emissions due to the energy and carbon intensive operations of the smelting and mining activities in South Africa. It is therefore critical that South Africa reach the targets set out in the Tronox Global Green House Gas Reduction Roadmap. This position is aimed to support reaching these targets.

Senior Process Improvement Engineer

Position Overview

This position is earmarked for process improvement functions specifically related to ilmenite mining and smelting, slag and iron processing technology with specific focus on Large Scale Energy Projects and other activities related to decreasing Green House Gas (GHG) emissions. The position will report to the Technology and Improvement Manager, Namakwa Sands South. The projects may be site specific or regional in nature. A key focus would be the development of business cases for the identified GHG Roadmap opportunities identified but will not only be limited to these projects.
 

The successful candidate will be expected to:

Take responsibility for GHG roadmap activities at the Site as well as sharing responsibility for projects at a larger regional scale (larger scale and more complex projects)
 

  • Monitor GHG performance and conduct analysis to determine the gap to the target.
  • Develop and assist with business cases for roadmap identified projects.
  • Identify new and further opportunities on the site.
  • Prioritization of emission reduction projects with inclusion in the 5-year CAPEX plan
  • Monthly updates on GHG portfolio and compile monthly reports for dissemination to relevant stakeholders and present at required forums.
  • Monitor project implementation processes and conduct close-out and benefits realization processes to ensure KPI’s are achieved.
  • Facilitate monthly performance management forums for sustainability pipeline, visibility, and progress monitoring.
  • Assist and support Supply Chain Management to ensure sustainable procurement to reduce scope 2 emissions.
 
Take responsibility for energy efficiency and associated portfolio management activities at the Smelter Site (energy efficiency projects with smaller contributions to emission reduction, but critical to reaching goals)
 
  • Monitor energy performance and conduct data analysis.
  • Develop and assist with business cases for energy improvement initiatives for the smelter site.
  • Be the owner of the energy improvement opportunity list for the site.
  • Gather monthly updates on energy portfolio initiatives and compile monthly reports for dissemination to relevant stakeholders.
  • Monitor project implementation processes and conduct close-out and benefits realization processes to ensure KPI’s are achieved.
  • Facilitate monthly performance management forums for energy improvement pipeline visibility and progress monitoring. Assist with the implementation of an energy management system and take ownership thereof for Site.
  • ISO50001 implementation coordination for the site

Sustainability Mindset
 
  • Establish and facilitate sustainability training sessions at each Site.
  • Establish and coordinate periodic sustainability awareness campaigns at each Site.
  • Establish and distribute periodic sustainability shares at each Site.

Process Efficiency
 
  • Conduct work in accordance with set strategies, plans and production targets.
  • Ensure the optimal use of available resources, both people and equipment.
  • Assume responsibility for Equipment selection, Metallurgical process design, Project Life cycles and associated financial metrics within the functional area.
  • Oversee the technical development and coaching of Engineers- and Technicians-in-Training.
  • Assist Production Engineers to evaluate and improve smelting process efficiency.

Safe and Healthy Work environment
 
  • Ensure and maintain a healthy environment, safe operations, and practices.
  • Comply with SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environmental and Quality) requirements.
  • Monitor, identify and respond to defects and / or sub-standard equipment performance and other improvement opportunities.

Business Improvement (BI)
 
  • Support Business Improvement Lead on specific BI tasks for the Smelter site.
  • Developing and translate continuous improvement strategies into implementation plans, in close liaison with line management and Regional or Global BI roles.
  • Ensure project costs and benefits are reflected in forecasts and budgets.
  • Coordinate reporting of BI programs (Operational Excellence, etc.) and ensures compliance to corporate standards for the specific site.
  • Portfolio Management for the site project.
 

Customer and Client Relationship Management
 

  • Liaise with internal and external customers, relevant statutory bodies to ensure sound business relationship management toward meeting client needs.
  • Ensure Tronox's image is maintained and always promoted (internally and externally).
  • Manage value-in-use projects on furnace products with internal and external customers.


Project Management
 

  • Idea evaluation and scoping of new projects.
  • Evaluate and complete projects and feasibility studies with minimum risk, within allocated timeframes and according to specified budgetary requirements.
  • Financial evaluation of projects as well as implementation of energy and sustainability projects.
  • Assume responsibility regarding improved processes technology and equipment selection.
  • Document and motivate projects through various stages of the gate approval process.
     

Qualifications & Experience

  • B Eng /BTech Metallurgical, Chemical Engineering or Mechanical/Electrical
  • Engineering that can illustrate process and energy efficiency and project experience. NQF Level 7 (Mandatory)
  • B Eng. Hons NQF Level 8 (Recommended)
  • Driver’s License (Mandatory)
  • 8-10 years’ Energy and/or Metallurgical experience.
  • At Least 3 to 5 years’ experience in large scale Renewable Energy Project development and implementation
  • At least 3 years pyrometallurgical plant processes.
  • Project and feasibility study experience (3 to 5 years).
  • Operating within a Heavy Industry environment (Mandatory).
  • Business Improvement or business process optimization experience, 1- 2 years
  • Computer Literacy (Mandatory)
  • At Least 3 to 5 years experience and understanding of the Regulatory and contractual environment in the Renewable energy space in South Africa
  • ISO 50001 exposure and implementation experience would be beneficial
