Principal Project Manager - Mineral Resources & Project Development

Position Overview

The purpose of the Principal Project Manager (PPM) role is to direct and manage project development for the duration of the project stages, to develop project plans and estimate the resources needed to achieve project goals and to manage risk that could impact on project outcomes, in accordance with the guidelines prescribed by Tronox Approach to Projects Methodologies. In appropriate cases the PPM may also be required to be the Project Manager. This position reports into the VP: Mineral Resources and Project Development via a direct reporting line. It has line management responsibility for the project managers and project team members required to execute and plan MRPD projects.

 

Primary Responsibilities

This role is accountable for:

OPERATIONAL, FINANCIAL AND TECHNICAL

Methodologies and standards

  • Implement Tronox Approach to Projects (TAP) project management frameworks, methodologies, and templates on project.
  • Provide feedback to Mineral Resources and Project Development (MRPD) on ways to improve TAP methodologies applied during project execution.

 

Project execution

  • Manage and ensure the optimal use of budget allocated to project.
  • Create and execute project work plans and revise accordingly to meet changing needs and requirements of projects.
  • Take action to mitigate and manage risks that can impact on the project. 
  • Manage the effective use of engineering standards, principles and practice for the planning, design, and implementation of engineering outcomes to support the project.
  • Identify and manage project dependencies and critical path.
  • Supervise and ensure the execution of projects in adherence to agreed Service Level Agreements (SLA's), service delivery standards and TAP guidelines.
  • Supervise day-to-day operational aspects of the project.
  • Ensure MRPD cost recoveries are done via the MRPD, PMO Manager
  • Project specific KPI’s may be agreed.
  • The Delegation of Authority (DOA) must always be abided by.
  • Forecasting of cost and time deliverables on the agreed frequency.

 

Project reporting           

  • Track and report on the achievement and progress of project milestones and deliverables.
  • Determine the frequency and content of status reports from the project team, analyze the results, and determine corrective action for potential problem areas.
  • Report on potential project risks and recommend action steps for risk mitigation.
  • Review project close out reports and create a recommendations report to identify successful and unsuccessful project elements.
  • Develop presentations to stakeholders and committees for reporting sessions, covering the relevant project management knowledge areas.
  • Maintain the relevant MRPD and Tronox Project systems for project and portfolio management.

 

Project governance       

  • Implement controls to ensure legal compliance within designated area. 
  • Apply controls to ensure legal and best practice compliance in accordance with the applicable legislation.
  • Implement and manage an effective SHE management system for the project, which is aligned to the operational team.
  • Provide and participate in governance systems for best practice.
  • Adhere to the requirements of quality management systems.
  • Ensure compliance to environmental Record of Decision (RoD).

MANAGEMENT RESULTS

Planning            

  • Plan project resourcing to ensure effective and efficient delivery and execution of the project plan.
  • Where required, negotiate with MRPD or functional heads for the acquisition of required human resources for cross-functional subject matter expert consultation. 

Organizing        

  • Delegate tasks and responsibilities to appropriate project team members and manage and monitor the completion of assigned tasks.
  • Mentor and motivate project team members in the achievement of assigned work and project outcomes.
 

Controlling        

  • Promote teamwork, provide support, and manage performance of project team members.
  • Participate proactively with the internal audit teams and perform self-audits according to TAP processes.
  • Scoring of projects at the beginning and end of DFS projects is mandatory using the TAP checklist scoring sheet. This should also be done at the beginning of implementation.

 

CUSTOMERS AND RELATIONSHIPS         

Stakeholder relationship management 

  • Identify key project stakeholders and execute stakeholder relationship management plans to address expectations and attitudes and report the effectiveness of engagement activities back to management.
  • Manage potential conflicts that may arise from resistance within stakeholder environments due to the implementation of new approaches by applying the appropriate change management tools and techniques.


INNOVATION AND IMPROVEMENT

Knowledge area development  

  • Continuously scan the environment and recommend potential new or trending approaches to ensure continuous improvement of TAP methodologies.
  • Continuously improve TAP methodologies by incorporating value-adding lessons learnt and sharing best practices.

 

SAFETY

Overall

  • Safety focus is key on all Tronox projects and working areas falling under this position, both from a design viewpoint and avoiding physical harm to our staff and contractors. This position will be key in driving our safety culture and performance. Personal commitment to this goal is crucial.

 

Qualifications & Experience

  • BSc Engineering along with a qualification in Project Management or Financial Management. MBA would be beneficial.
  • Knowledge of PMBOK
  • 10 years plus of large capital (>US$100million) project implementation exposure ideally in various project phases.
  • Senior line management experience
  • Exposure and Management of project management systems particularly for cost, time, risk, quality, and SHE.
  • This appointment will be Mining Projects related and suitable exposure and experience is this environment is a pre-requisite.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and influencing skills to enable effective Operational and Corporate business partner relationships.
  • Demonstrates the highest ethical standards and values.
  • Possesses an appreciation and sensitivity for a diverse and multi-cultural environment.
