Position Overview
Takes the accountability of oversight and delivery of occupational health and medical services for Tronox Namakwa Sands. Oversees the design and delivery of Occupational Health and Occupational Hygiene program. Acts as primary point of professional contact with all relevant external health authorities, health professionals, regulatory bodies, employees and contractors. Takes the responsibility for operational requirements for all aspects of occupational health within the business.
Primary Responsibilities
- Guiding and overseeing the implementation of the medical surveillance and control programme for Tronox Mineral Sands, at three clinics, but not limited to:
- Developing, authorising and maintaining policies, standards, protocols, procedures and/or codes of practice to ensure the effective implementation of the medical surveillance and control programme as well as legal compliances.
- Verifying the specifications of medical facilities and equipment necessary to conduct the medical surveillance and control programme.
- Conducting the Man Job Specifications for all the homogeneous exposure groups.
- Ensuring that the required medical surveillance/examinations, reviews and/or health certifications as per legal requirements and COP’s, including, but not limited to the following, are conducted:
- Pre employment medical and fitness declaration
- Yearly medical and fitness declaration
- Transfer medical and fitness declaration
- Exit medical
- Drivers – PDP medical and fitness declaration
- Radiation workers medical and fitness declaration
- Fire team fitness evaluation and fitness declaration
- Ensuring that Occupational health related injuries, illnesses or diseases are identified/detected early and effectively treated.
- Ensuring that medical incapacity cases are appropriately identified and managed.
- Reporting to Department of Minerals and Petroleum Resources, Minerals Council of South Africa (Mincosa), and Mine Health and Safety Council among other stakeholders.
- Reviewing Ergonomic and Hygiene evaluations of operational areas to advise on engineering methods to eliminate health hazards.
- Where an employee or contractor has been injured on duty exceeded the radiation dose limits, has been excessively contaminated with radioactive material and/or has contracted an occupational illness or disease, managing the occupational health injury, illness or disease to minimise the severity thereof, by amongst others, but not limited to:
- Treating, counselling and/or referring to appropriate facilities the injured (employee or contractor), both during and after office hours, including, organising specialised hospital or specialist treatment (if required). In this respect it will be incumbent on the person to be available to render his/her services within a reasonable timescale.
- Assisting with the investigation of the accident/incident from a medical perspective.
- Endorsing a full report(s) on the accident/incident from a medical perspective and ensuring that such report(s) is kept in the personal medical file of the person(s) involved.
- Liase with OHS in reporting to Rand Mutual Assurance (RMA), all legally approved and licensed association as defined by Section 30 of the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Disease (COID) Act:
- All occupational illnesses and conditions that are listed in Schedule 3 of the COID Act to the Workmen’s Compensation Commissioner (WCC)
- All occupational lung diseases that are listed as compensable diseases in the Occupational Diseases in Mines and Works Act (Act 78 of 1973) to the Medical Bureau for Occupational Diseases (MBOD) respectively.
- Guidance to the Occupational Health Nursing Practitioners (OHN) on occupational and radiation health related issues.
- Keeping informed and providing advice and support to Company Management on occupational, radiation and/or any other health related issues, including, but not limited to:
- Assisting with the development of OHS policies, procedures, standards, and codes of practice.
- Advising and providing support on any health issues that may arise, endemic diseases and/or epidemics or pandemics.
- Providing primary health care service
- Manage all Medicals and placement of workers in line with the Occupational Risk Exposure Profiles for specific Job Categories.

Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) (Mandatory)
- Post Graduate qualification in Occupational Medicine (Mandatory)
- Minimum of 3 years work experience in medicine in occupational health and occupational medical surveillance in a mining setup.
- Appointed Medical Practitioner (AMP) training as recognized by the NNR (as set out in the NNR’s document RG-013)
- Registered by the HPCSA as competent to act independently as a medical practitioner.
- Code B driver’s license (Mandatory)
Knowledge & Skills
- The ideal candidate will possess a medical degree, relevant occupational health certifications, and a strong understanding of workplace safety regulations.
