Senior Process Control Engineer

Location

Namakwa Sands, Smelter (Saldanha), Western Cape

Position Overview

Accountable for technical support and medium-term technical improvement projects on the SME site.

Qualification & Experience:

  • BTech/BSc qualification with Electrical/Control Engineering subjects.
  • 10+ years in a Heavy/Industrial Industry Environment (Essential)
  • 5+ years in a Control Engineering field will be advantageous.
  • Knowledge/Experience with:
    • PLC (IEC 61131-3) and/or DCS and/or micro controller controls
    • PLC/DCS Programming
    • Field Instrumentation and analyzers
    • Electrical drives – DOL & VFD
    • Control Systems Commissioning & fault finding.
    • Industrial Ethernet Communications– Profinet/ModbusTCP/IEC61850
    • Profibus Networking and communications
    • MS Windows operating systems – Server & Client.
    • Design/Implementation/Management of Managed Ethernet network systems for Operational Technology (OT) systems.
    • Process Data Historians
    • Implementation/Optimization of Process Alarm Systems.

Job Responsibilities (Outputs)

  • Coordinate control system audits, health assessments, lifecycle planning, and data analysis for optimization.
  • Participate/signoff in MoC process for projects/initiatives requiring changes to control systems.
  • Provide control system support for large capital projects.
  • Assist in investigations following significant incidents and production excursions.
  • Co-ordinate and plan interface upgrades
  • Lead/Assist with HAZOP and PHR studies.
  • Develop process control strategies and standards to improve operational efficiency.
  • Identify control improvement opportunities and work with the process control & operations teams to make improvements / resolve issues.
  • Manage medium to long-term opportunities in accordance with project management principles.
  • Support Operational Excellence - API, Green House Gas, and Centre of Excellence initiatives.
  • Assist production and maintenance teams with troubleshooting - Utilizing established techniques such as RCFA, FMEA, DMAIC and LSS.
  • Oversee the technical development and coaching of Process Control Engineers- and Professionals-in-Training.
  • Assure process documentation is regularly developed and maintained.

Process Efficiency

  • Conduct work in accordance with set strategies, plans, and production targets. Ensure optimal use of available resources, assume responsibility for equipment selection, metallurgical process design, and project life cycles.
Safe and Healthy Work Environment
  • Participate in safety initiatives, ensure HAZOPS are conducted, maintain a healthy environment, and comply with SHEQ and technical requirements.
Continuous Improvement
  • Initiate continuous improvement opportunities leading to cost-saving initiatives. Stay updated on new developments within the specialist field, conduct research work to initiate process changes, and act as a Business Improvement process champion.
Customer and Client Relationship Management
  • Set up, monitor, and update a stakeholder register for each project study phase. Maintain and promote the T&I image, provide professional advisory support service.
Project Management:
  • Set up, monitor, and update project study schedules, risk registers, and expense control tools. Compile a detailed project study Scope of Work, evaluate and complete project post-completion audits.
