Business Unit & Section: Namakwa Sands- Engineering
Primary Location: Smelter Operations (Saldanha)
Position Summary
This position will provide support to the Smelter plant which will include the CO Generation plant and will be responsible for first line mechanical and electrical duties to improve plant reliability, increase equipment performance and minimize production downtime from unplanned equipment stoppages. From time to time, planned and unplanned maintenance work will be conducted as required in different department on-site. This position will require day and night shift work as well as overtime and standby work as required. As such, it is essential that the person filling this position must be able to function as an effective team member.
Qualification & Experience
- Grade 12 Mathematics & Physical Science with a minimum E symbol or Technical N2 Mathematics & Science with a minimum E symbol.
- Minimum of a N2 Qualification with the following subjects:
- Electrical Trade Theory
- Fitting & Machining Trade Theory
- Electronics and / or Engineering drawings
- Certified Trade Test Qualification
- Valid code 08 (Code B) driver’s license
- 2 Years Post Trade Test experience and a sound knowledge of and experience in heavy industry environment.

- Sound understanding and application of OHSA regulations & SANS.
- Knowledge of technical drawings i.e. electrical, instrumentation and hydraulics

- Knowledge of low & medium voltage operations, fault finding and repairs
- Knowledge of overhead cranes
- Knowledge of hydraulic systems
- Knowledge of conveyor systems
- Computer literate
- SAP knowledge
Job Responsibilities
- Inspect, repair and maintain assets, equipment and surrounding infrastructure to minimize adverse impact on production.
- Daily liaison with relevant plant personnel at different levels regarding breakdowns, spares and equipment.
- Perform hands-on maintenance support during breakdowns and shutdowns.
- Pro-active approach and perform preventative maintenance on production equipment.
- Conduct technical evaluations (testing) of equipment.
- Adhere to Occupational Health and Safety Act and comply with company specific SHE policies and procedures.
- Ensure and maintain a healthy environment, safe operations and practices.
- Collaborating with other team members, to ensure efficient operations.
- Assist with technical investigations and RCFA’s.
- Identification of defects which will include safety and reporting to Supervisor.
- Conduct operations and support to CO Gen plant.
- Perform fair and reasonable tasks related to the job and working environment, at the discretion of the Supervisor.
